Learn About Episodic Novels in Fiction

Learn About Episodic Novels in FictionLearn About Episodic Novels in FictionAn episodic novel is a narrative composed of loosely connected incidents, each one more or less self-contained, often connected by a central character or characters. It is one way of constructing a plot. Typically, characters change very little over the course of an episodic novel, though a relatively simple story may unfold. To get a feeling for an episodic novel, think of the television series of the 1960s and 1970s. The characters and storylines could be carefully crafted or merely sketched the subject matter could be dark or humorous the message of the show could be non-existent or quite deep. But no matter what occurred in any given episode, the character, his or her motivations, and the relationships among characters would change little or not at all. Even when characters encountered new people and distributionspolitiks each week, no episode would have any significant impact on the aktivposten. The H istory of the Episodic Novel The very first episodic novel (and arguably the very first novel ever written) was Lazarillo de Tormes, published in 1554. Lazarillo is not only the first episodic novel, it is also the first picaresque novel. Picaresque novels tell the story, often from the first person, of a lowborn person or rogue who drifts from place to place and adventure to adventure. Lazarillo was an inspiration to Miguel de Cervantes, who wrote the episodic, picaresque novel in 1605. From that point forward, the genre became much more popular. A few famous authors of episodic novels most of which could also be considered picaresque include Jonathan SwiftCharles DickensHenry FieldingMark TwainJack KerouacJRR Tolkien (the prototype for hundreds of similarly episodic fantasy novels and series) In short, the episodic novel has become an entrenched entity in the world of fiction writing. Perhaps not surprisingly, most famous episodic novels are written by men, and most have male p rotagonists. This is partly an outgrowth of the reality that it has always been easier for boys and men to be footloose adventurers. How Episodic Novels Are Structured It is relatively easy to plan out an episodic novel. You start with a character who, for one reason or another, is launched into a situation that involves travel and a series of adventures with different groups of characters and challenges. In the end, the protagonist finds happiness (or, at least, a satisfying outcome). Sixteen-year-old Joe runs away from an abusive home and finds himself drifting from job to job, sometimes finding kindness and sometimes encountering abuse. In the end, he falls in love and gets married.A young centaur is told that his world is crumbling, and he is the only one who can save it. He is given an amulet and a map and sets off to find the spell that protects his world. Along the way he meets... in the end he finds...A middle-aged man loses his wife, quits his job, and sets out to disco ver his true self. Along the way he meets... in the end he finds... While this type of structure is sufficient to outline an episodic novel, it is by no means enough to craft a satisfying set of characters, situations, tensions, and outcomes. In addition to these basic elements, you will need to Create a fully rounded protagonist and, most likely, at least a few additional fully conceived characters with whom your protagonist can interact.Invent tensions that not only motivate your character but also draw your reader along. Everyone knows that your character will save his planet, his soul, etc. in the end so internal tensions will be as important as the general direction of the plot.Conceive of a meaningful outcome. Your story may start with the question Will Charlie the Centaur save the world? But since your readers know the answer before they start reading (of course he will), you will need to think more deeply about what happens to Charlie and his world by the end of the story.

What employers need to know about the May Jobs Report

What employers need to know about the May Jobs ReportWhat employers need to know about the May Jobs ReportWhat employers need to know about the May Jobs Report Martis, contributorThe economy expanded by 75,000 jobs in May, according to the latest monthly U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report. Average hourly wages increased by 6 cents, while the unemployment rate remained at 3.6%. Here are the headlines from Mays report. The Economy is a DynamicThe BLS reported a weak 75,000 payrolls in May, sharply lower than the 175,000 jobs predicted by Bloomberg economists. This is in contrast to the 224,000 jobs (revised) in April.Similarly, earlier this week, payroll processor ADPreported a small gain of 27,000 jobs in the private sector, marking a 9-year low since economic expansion began and the jobs market bottomed out. These rollercoaster changes can be a bit perplexing, but its important to remember that this is only a snapshot, and the economy isnt static. In theory, there could be as b ig a rebound in June after the disappointment today.Job GrowthServices Industry Employment Hits a 7-Month HighWith the addition of 33,000 jobs, the BLS report showed that the majority of employment gains occurred in the business and professional services sector. This jibes with data released earlier this week by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM)that showed a gauge of services industry employment increased by 4.4 points to 56.9%.This not only beats its two-and-a-half-year low of 55.5% in April, but also marks a seven-month high for the sector. (A reading over 50% is viewed as positive for the economy, and anything over 55% is considered exceptional). This surge demonstrates that the services sector has held up in the face of growing concerns about the impact of the Trump administrations trade wars with Mexico and China.Industries HiringFederal Reserve is Expected to Cut Interest RatesAhead of the BLS report, speculationbegan circulating that the Federal Reserve would consider a rate cut in the event of economic weakness. With Mays low job numbers pointing to a tightening labor market, its even more likely that rates will be slashed when policymakers meet later this month. This gives us a real sense of deceleration in the U.S. economy, Diane Swonk, chief economist at accounting firm Grant Thornton, told the New York Times. We knew this was occurring, but this could be a summer of discontent. It also gives the Fed a green light to cut rates. This can be seen as positive news for businesses, as lower interest rates gives consumers more money to spend, which can create a ripple effect of increased spending throughout the economy.Unemployment RatesEmployers are Tightening the Purse StringsWages continued to slowly build in May, with the jobs report indicating that average hourly wages increased by six cents, totaling $27.83. Over the year, average hourly earnings have grown by 3.1%.This proves that despite a tightening labor market- the unemployment held at a low 3.6%, while only 75,000 jobs were added- employers must find alternative ways to attract and retain employees.Employers should consider bulking up compensation packages with more benefits like flexible work options, wellness programs, and increase paid time off. Monsters 2019 State of the Candidate Surveyfound that 401(k)/retirement benefits was considered most important for American workers.Wage GrowthThe next jobs report will be released July 5, 2019, at 830 a.m. EST. In the meantime, see how can help drive job growth at your organization.

That figure is significantly lower than economists forecasts. Updated figures for March and April also show that job gains were 75,000 less than the BLS had previously reported. With behauptung revisions, job growth has averaged 151,000 per month over the last three months.Professional and business services employers led job growth in May, adding 33,000 positions. The unemployment rate for college-degreed workers who are 25 or older - the professionals most highly sought by employers - was also unchanged from April 2.1%.What employers need to knowSummer is almost here - and that means many of your team members are getting ready to make good use of their vacation time. research shows that more than half (58%) of workers save their vacation time for the months of June, July and August. And most workers plan on taking 10 days off this summer, on average.Of course, the business itself wont be taking a vacation. Even during the summertime slowdown, work still needs to get done. One way to keep everyday work and vital projects moving forward during the summer is to bring in seasonal employees. Temporary project professionals can titelseite for staffing gaps while your full-time employees are taking some well-deserved time off.Meanwhile, you can step back, evaluate your firms hiring needs and make sure you have the right resources in place for the remainder of the year. You may even discover that the temporary empl oyees you engage for the summer would make great full-time employees for your business all year-round.You cant always predict when your company will need extra help. Learn how seasonal employees can benefit your workplace.START HIRINGWhat job seekers need to knowMany candidates believe they should put their job search on hold during the summer, thinking, Whats the point? Nobody is hiring right now. But the fact is, the summer months are far from sleepy when it comes to hiring Businesses of all types plan to recruit new employees in June, July and August.Companies are staffing up to meet anticipated workload demands in the fourth quarter. Hiring new employees now gives them ample time to onboard and train these workers before fall. And for many businesses, the summer hiring push is on top of their ongoing efforts to fill other critical roles in the organization. In a hot hiring market, candidates with in-demand skills dont usually have to wait long to find a job opportunity. If youre in a field like technology or finance, for example, you could have an array of options to consider. Unemployment in these industries is trending well below the national average, according to recent BLS figures. For instance, unemployment for accountants was just 1.8% in the first quarter of 2019 for software developers, it was 1.6%.If you arent ready to pursue a full-time job this summer, consider working as a seasonal employee. It can help you build up your resume - and expand your professional network. Interim positions often lead to full-time opportunities, as well. So, not only could you find a great summer job working as a temporary employee, but also, a potential path to a new career.

How to Apply Online for Jobs Without Wasting Time

How to Apply Online for Jobs Without Wasting TimeHow to Apply Online for Jobs Without Wasting TimeFind My Profession offers the besttips on how to apply online for jobs without wasting time. We can offer these online job search tips because we spend time each day on the best ways to apply for job binnenseekers. We save our clients the time from dealing with the energy-sucking, mojo-killing job forms that make job seekers feel like, I must elendlage be doing enough to find workThe truth is, when you apply for jobs online you are only doing a small part of the job search. The real effort comes with networking, interviews, following up, and all the required preparation. So, do you want to learn how to apply online without wasting a ton of time? Try the following1. Apply through company websites and not job search portalsWhen you register for one of the many job search portals, your personal information can be used for a variety of reasons outside of actually finding you a job. They can s end you invites to classes, webinars, and send you automated emails to get you to purchase a premium membership in their database.Meanwhile, the actual job may live on the company website in the company database. That is where you want your data. You may get direct solicitations from employees within the company who found your resume in their database. Granted, company website online forms may not be as slick as speedy job search portals. So what? You want your info on the company website, not the spammy job search portal.2. Trust in long-form applicationsAnytime you are told of ways you can save time in a job search process, these will be the most saturated processes with job seeker applications. Why? If you can apply to 100 jobs in one day by clicking on 100 links and attaching your resume, so can everyone else.Long-form applications weed out the people who get frustrated filling them out. Therefore, the people who move further in the job seeking process know how to apply online bec ause they do what everyone else is NOT doing.3. Read job requirements and do not spam job listingsAny job seeker today can take a few words from a Google search, build a resume, and pretend to be great at something. We can all eventually be trained to perform certain tasks on the job. But to avoid wasting time applying for jobs online this requires being picky.Be honest with yourself. When you apply for things do so with the mindset of looking for work you can do starting tomorrow, not after some job training. Knowing how to apply online requires first understanding what you are willing to accept and what motivates you. If you kinda think you want the job or can kinda do it...skip it.4. Bailout of any job application that starts to require TMIThis mainly happens with shady job search portals. You are filling out a form and everything seems fine. They ask for your resume and a few questions about your favorite industries. Then, suddenly the questions go deeper. They start to ask for private information regarding credit cards, the last four digits of your social security number, salary history and more.Keep in mind, you are on a job search portal that is simply collecting data to know how to match you to jobs. They do not offer you jobs. They offer you a way for job seekers to apply online. If they want too much information, stop filling out the online form immediately.5. Use LinkedIn for online job searchesExperience has proven time and again that jobs posted on LinkedIn by a staff member (also on LinkedIn) are the most effective to apply for. A recent study of LinkedIn statistics shows that 94% of recruiters use LinkedIn to vet candidates. As an online job search tip, comparing LinkedIn to other sites like Indeed or ZipRecruiter, LinkedIn clearly has the most effective filters to find jobs you should be working in. Even though there are 10 million active job listings on LinkedIn, not every job is perfect for you.6. Never trust auto-filling of online formsWithou t going into a crazy amount of technical detail, never trust the online job applications that allow for auto-filling of the forms. Why? They are never 100% perfect, NONE of them work perfectly because there are so many different resume formats. If you use it, double-checkand adjust all the info is in the right place.7. The best tip for how to apply onlineFocus on job listings in which you can see who actually posted the job. It does not happen often for many reasons, but when it does, it is great to apply if you can eventually reach out to the job poster.Generally speaking, the best tip for how to apply online for jobs and not waste time Stick to processes that involve more people than technology.

Know Your Audience

Know Your AudienceKnow Your AudienceBefore you say it or write it, think about the listener and reader. How do they want to hear it and read it?The starting point for all communication is becoming aware of the intended audience and approaching them on an appropriate level. So many times, people get themselves into difficult situations because they did not consider the audiences reaction to the message. Anyone could make a list of controversies that started as the result of an insensitive remark or one that was not well thought out. In addition to considering what the message says, as a writer (and speaker) you need to consider how the ideas are expressed. To ensure successful written communication, first think about the people who will read it. By putting yourself in their shoes, you will gain insight into what they want to know and how they want to be addressed. The Temple of Apollo at Delphi in Greece has an inscription that cautions each person to know yourself. Improving communica tions encourages people to know thy audience.Salespeople are no strangers to the concept of put yourself in the buyers position. It means that the seller (in this case, you as writer) will consider what features and benefits to present to the person on the receiving end. Word choice and message length (think brevity) will show your recipient how much thought and care you put into crafting your message.Audiences are composed of people, all of whom have different perceptions. These questions will yield a variety of answers, simply because perceptions differWhat is a lot of money? What is tall? What is hot?Its a fun exercise to ask these questions in a diverse group. Notice how responses differ, based on peoples life experiences, income levels, educational backgrounds - anyone could increase this list. In fact, try asking a group to define the word hit. Youll get answers that range from a Top 40 single to another card at the blackjack table and many others. The point is that by showing the audience that you thought about these factors before approaching them, youre demonstrating that you care about them. What could be a better compliment? To avoid having messages misperceived, misconstrued or misunderstood, choose language that will be understood by fruchtwein (preferably all) of your recipients. Think of the individuals who comprise your audience before you communicate with them. Ask yourselfWho is the audience? Why am I writing/presenting? What do I want my audience to know or do?What do they already know? What is their level of understanding? What is their likely attitude about the topic? How can I honor my audiences needs and perspectives? What does my audience want to achieve? What medium will support the message the best - e-mail, letter, memo, report, proposal, etc.?What format or layout will appeal to the audience and support the message? Then, as the final step before beginning to write, organize your ideas. Its a true sign of respect for your audience. Show th at you are concerned for their time and attention. Plan to present the information that will make the most sense to them. Your organizational pattern may take any form (chronological, inside to outside, top to bottom, etc.). However you deliver the information, just make sure that someone new to your subject area will get it without having to strain the brain to do so. With all this in place, youre ready to put fingers to keyboard, or (how dated to say) pen to paper. Approach the task with a positive attitude, a clear purpose and straightforward organization, and youll be on the path to achieving your goal.

These 5 Email Mistakes Can Kill Your Career

These 5 schmelzglas Mistakes Can Kill Your CareerThese 5 Email Mistakes Can Kill Your Career In an age of social media, where Snapchat and Instagram are all the rage, it can quickly appear as if the schmelzglas is outdated and elend really needed. But not so fast What do the statistics say?According to a Technalysis Research survey of 1,001 working US adults, email is totenstill the fruchtwein used means of communication in the workplace. According to the study , 75 percent of communications with co-workers take place via old school methods of communication such as email, phone, and text while 78 of workplace communications with outside contact takes please via email, phone, and text.Email can make or break your career, and it is crucial to avoid making the following email mistakes 1. Not Sending a Thank You Email After a Job Interview One of the most dangerous email mistakes you can make that can negatively affect your career has to do with the early stages of your career . Specifically, it is the mistake of not sending a thank you email to your interviewer after a successful job interview. In fact, some hiring decision makers would flat out filter out a candidate for not sending a thank you note.According to a research study by Accountemps , a Robert Half company, 80 percent of HR managers say that after-interview thank you messages from interview candidates are helpful when reviewing candidates, and 94 percent of these HR managers prefer to receive the thank you messages through email. Yet, just 24 percent of job applicants send a thank you note. Not only will sending a thank you email after a job interview help you stand out and increase your chances of landing the job, but not sending it could actually kill your job prospects.2. Failing to Send a Follow-Up Email After a Job Application According to research from Glassdoor, the average job opening will attract 250 applications from job-seeking candidates, around four to six of t he candidates will be called for an interview, and just one will be hired. Despite this overwhelming odds against their application, a significant 37 percent of job seekers do not follow up after submitting their job application. Most recruiters dont have the time to go through 250 applications and will give preference to applications that stand out one of the most effective ways to stand out and be noticed is by properly following up via email. In fact, a Robert Half study found that 100 percent of Canadian hiring managers encourage job candidates to follow up on their application.3. Gossiping About a Superior or a Co-Worker in Your Email Ranking high on the list of email mistakes that can kill your career is the mistake of gossiping about a fellow worker or a superior in your email. This is based on a national survey by staffing agency The Creative Group that surveyed 250 executives randomly selected from some of the worlds biggest companies. According to the survey, gossipi ng about a superior or co-worker will almost always result in a termination. In a particular instance, a receptionist sent a gossipy and catty email about another employee to the wrong person and she paid with her job. In another instance, someone made a nasty comment about a supervisor in an email. The email was then sent to the supervisor by mistake, leading to the dismissal of the person who wrote the email. While it might seem fun and innocuous at first, avoid gossiping about any of your co-worker or supervisor by email. The email could get forwarded to them accidentally, or intentionally, and can cost you your job.4, Bad Email Grammar While you might not be a writer or work at a writing-related job, it is important to realize that bad email grammar can cost you your job. Several CEOs have gone on record to state that they wont hire people who use poor grammar this includes the CEO of iFixit who once published an HBR opinion piece on why he wont hire people who use poor grammar and a piece from founder of Candid Culture, Shari Harley, who explained that she had to pass on a candidate due to poor grammar usage. While bad email grammar could make it difficult for you to get hired, it could also result in you getting fired from your existing job. Just ask New Zealand accountant Vicki Walker who was fired from her job due to bad email grammar, or ask Liz who almost got fired because her email indicating that she re-sent (as in, sent again) an email from her superior was misunderstood to mean that she resent (as in, hate) the email.Good email grammar speaks volumes about you that youre patient and focused, and that you most importantly care about how you are perceived and as a result put good effort into it traits any employer will value.5. Violating Company Email Rules Most organizations have clear rules about what employees can and cant do with company email address. For some, it is that you musnt access company email on devices outside of the corporat e network. For others, it is that you must never use company email for personal purposes. For political office holders, knowledge of violating email rules has always resulted in scandals, possible dismissals, and political loss. It isnt much different in the corporate world.Your organization most certainly has email rules - things you can and cant do with the company email. It is important to familiarize yourself with these rules and avoid violating them.

5 Job Seeking Tips for Baby Boomers

5 Job Seeking Tips for Baby Boomers 5 Job Seeking Tips for Baby Boomers There are now four generations of workers competing in today’s job market: Millennials, Gen X, Gen Z, and Baby Boomers. For the first time in the USA, it is possible to find employees in a company born almost 60 years apart. For Baby Boomers born between 1946 to 1964, it has become increasingly difficult to find work due to age discrimination. The myths surrounding older workers usually talk about how they are difficult to work with or overqualified. If you are a Baby Boomer, read these job seeking tips on how to get around biases and myths as you are job seeking. 5. Research who you will interview with Interviewing with hiring managers across generations comes with challenges. Each generation has a very different attitude of how one should work and the proper attitude for the company. So, yes, be a bit of an ageist yourself. You may need to adjust your approach with each hiring manager. For example, a Millennial or Gen Z hiring manager will not view “company loyalty” as valuable. You may need to sell them on your ability to be tech savvy and adapt to changes. These generations are also 100% paperless. They do not know a time when paper filing existed. A Gen X hiring manager will focus more on your skills, experience, and quantifiable numbers while caring very little for a job candidate’s need for personal attention and acknowledgment. Gen X'ers, by nature, is also a suspicious bunch. Any job skill you claim to have needs to be backed up with facts. It helps to estimate how old the hiring manager might be to see what approach you need for the job interview. 4. Show you are not clueless about today’s trends This does not mean you should dress like a Millennial or Gen Z. This will make you look like you are trying too hard and look older than you are. However, toss out the old resume and get one done in today’s resume language. Maintain a high level of energy. Also, get in touch with today’s technology and show a never-ending passion for learning and changing. Update your social media footprint to show you are aware why certain social media behaviors are frowned upon by younger generations. 3. Get to the point at all times As a Baby Boomer, you have seen it all. You have watched America change several times and no doubt you have stories about your experiences and overcoming challenges. However, for job interviews, get to the point and stay focused on what the company needs at all times. Show how your experience makes you prepared for the job, but do not go into lengthy stories or explanations. 2. Do not scare companies with your qualifications Experienced Baby Boomers often generate a fear that they will be overqualified. Ease that fear by letting hiring managers know you would love to help further advance teams with your qualifications. You are letting the company know in an unselfish way that they will benefit from your knowledge. You are expressing that you will never be greedy or difficult with others when it comes to your experience. You are there to help teams and a company grow, not withhold information or make lives difficult. 1. Show you want to learn Life is about facing challenges caused by a need to reinvent yourself every five years. However, at some point in life, we tend to seek comfort more than challenges. In the process, people learn less and stick to a routine. If you are a Baby Boomer used to an outdated way of working, you will need to change and be willing to learn something new, not just for the job but for the rest of your time at the company. For your interview, do not just talk about what you would like to do, go a step further and seek opportunities to do more. Consider volunteer work or taking business courses related to a new trend. You are showing everyone that you have what it takes to reinvent yourself, consider new ideas, and learn new skills needed for your career.

Here are 16 tips to help you be better at adulting

Here are 16 tips to help you be better at 'adulting' Here are 16 tips to help you be better at 'adulting' What are some of your top tips for adulting well?I’m 30 now and I’d say that I’ve been “Adulting Well” for about 7 years. As a result, I own a 7-figure business, have achieved total financial freedom, live by the beach, have an amazing girlfriend, I’m in the best shape of my life, and generally live a happy and amazing life. Here are my tips to help you do the same.(Important Note: Being an “Adult” is a matter of action and character … Not age. I know 40-year-old children and 16-year-old adults.)Exercise dailyYou owe it to yourself to take care of your body. I don’t care if you run, bike, pump iron, or throw a frisbee with your dog. Work up a sweat every day and take care of your body like it’s the only one you’ll ever have … because it is.Stop looking for handoutsFrom mom, dad, the government, friends, and rich relatives. Take care of your own shit and be self reliant. It will lead to far more confidence and satisfaction in the long run.Listen more than you s peakNo one really cares about your opinion. So shut up, listen to others, and provide value when possible. No one likes that guy who only talks about himself.Sleep 8 hours a nightQuit playing Fortnite until 2 a.m. and prioritize your sleep. It will dramatically improve your performance and make you happier overall.Quit getting sh-t facedC’mon guys! Getting a little buzzed is fine. Heck, it’s one of my favorite parts of the week. But getting so drunk that you can’t even speak in a coherent sentence is definitely NOT something adults should do.Take full responsibility for your lifeNo, it’s not your parents’ fault, it’s not society’s fault, it’s not the school’s fault. You and you alone are responsible for your life and results. Quit bitching about how unfair life is and DO something to change it.Educate yourself dailyIf you aren’t expanding your mind and learning new things, you aren’t a real adult. Adults know that times change and life moves at a crazy speed. S o they do everything they can to stay ahead of the curve. Kids focus on entertainment. Adults focus on education.Spend less than you earnI don’t care if you have to shower at your local gym and live out of your car. Don’t finance your life on credit and don’t blow your money on stupid purchases.Have passions other than Netflix and XboxSure, when you’re a kid playing video games and watching TV is fine. But if you want to be an adult, you need to cultivate interests that don’t involve a screen. Seriously… Pick up a paintbrush, a guitar, or something …Don’t be a d-ckIf you still yell at your server when your food is cold, scream at customer support agents, or flip off old ladies while you’re in traffic … You’re not just a child, you’re also an ass hole. Be nice to other people. You never know when you’ll need that kindness in return.Work on something you loveBuild a business, write a book, create a masterful painting. Create something of value for the world i nstead of just consuming crap all the time.Use social media responsiblyI.e. Sparingly. Kids waste their time worrying about “likes” and “follows” adults use social media as a tool to promote their brand and keep in touch with friends.Have goalsIf you aren’t growing, you’re dying. Stop sitting on the sidelines mindlessly consuming content and start making something of yourself. You only get one life… Make the most of it.Don’t let mommy and daddy make decisions for youI know 30-year-old “men” who won’t travel, break up with their girlfriend, or get a new job because they’re worried about what their parents will think. I love my parents as much as the next person but guess what? They don’t have to live my life! So I don’t let them make big life decisions for me.Be politePlease and thank you goes a long way. Open the door for your elders. Let people get in front of you in traffic. And generally be a nice person.Do what needs to be doneWhatever you want in lif e, you can have it. But you have to be willing to pay the price. So stop mentally masturbating to ideas of greatness and success and just do what you need to do to achieve it.Hope this helpsStay Grounded, AndrewThis post first appeared on Quora.

Reaching Self-Actualization Through Our Jobs [Infographic]

Reaching Self-Actualization Through Our Jobs [Infographic] Reaching Self-Actualization Through Our Jobs [Infographic] In order to reach self-actualization, we have to fulfill the more basic needs that reside on the lower levels of Maslow’s famous hierarchy of needs. These lower levels include our physiological needs (like food and water), safety, love and belonging, and esteem. Achieving these milestones within the confines of our careers can be especially difficult. With that in mind, we offer the following tips on reaching self-actualization in a work environment. Safety Safety and security don’t just revolve around having a home and avoiding life-threatening danger. Rather, feeling safe and secure also means  having things like job security, good health, and general life stability. Finding employment  with a company that has long-term growth potential or that offers a  service that will never be unnecessary can help ensure job security. You should feel certain about your  companys future and vitality. Having stability within your  work environment is vital, too: change can be good, but too much change in too little time can be unsettling. It is also important to find ways to ensure your health. Working in a dangerous job or for a company that lacks health coverage can disrupt ones  progress towards feeling safe. An employer that  offers paid leave or cost-effective health coverage  is a good employer, from a safety standpoint. Love and Belonging Love and belonging is all about relationships. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find friends within the workplace, but doing so is dramatically important. You want to find a work environment that makes you feel valued, like you are  part of a cohesive team. If you don’t feel like part of a team,  or if you feel secluded from your coworkers, it can be difficult to feel like you  belong. Having friendships in the workplace encourages us to come to work every day, and it makes a  job more enjoyable. Things are less stressful when we have others to talk with and vent to. Look for an office setting that cultivates friendships and open communication. Try to encourage social events outside of work and make efforts to find friends. Also seek out companies  emphasize team-building and group activities. Esteem For Maslow, esteem is all about feeling successful. This is accomplished through things like awards and respect. An office setting that recognizes  achievements through  bonuses and other rewards can help us feel more esteemed. Gaining a higher education can also help us with esteem. College degrees not only help us with job security, but they can also help us land  higher positions at work. Being able to add Dr. or Ph.D. to your name is also a little bit of personal prestige  that should give you a boost every time your write it. Employees who have reached self-actualization tend to be more productive and positive. They become strong leaders in their companies and are usually the ones that others look to for advice. Finding  personal growth in the workplace  benefits not only you, but also the company your work for. Survey These are the reasons employees stay or dont

Survey These are the reasons employees stay â€" or don't Survey These are the reasons employees stay - or don't Global human capital management technology company Ceridian recently released the 2017 Pulse of Talent Report showing that “good relations with colleagues” was the most popular reason high performers remained with their employers, cited by 49% of high-performing employees.Respondents could pick more than one answer on the survey, and these other reasons weren’t far behind: “good salary” (48%), “interesting work” (47%), and “good working conditions” and “job security” (both 46%).Workers in the “high performing” category were defined as those “with the best job dedication and the strongest commitment to helping the company achieve its goals.”Researchers surveyed 1,602 people in Canada and the U.S., who “represented salaried and hourly workers, as well as a mix of full-time and part-time employees 18 years of age and older.” The Nielsen Company  carried out the study for Ceridian.Generational differencesThe report  also looked at how different generatio ns view their current work situations. Among those surveyed in North America who haven’t hit age 30 yet, more than half want to stay where they currently work for fewer than 5 years. Older workers were happier to stay put. For all participants, the number looking to leave within five years was 38%.Where high-performers workAmong high performers in both the U.S. and Canada, 85% say they’re employed at places that make their values evident (compared to 72% of all surveyed), 72% know what their company seeks to accomplish professionally (compared to 49% of all surveyed), and 81% “feel positive or very positive about the company’s financial future” (compared to 69% of the general population). But money has the power to make some star hires leave -  the report looked at high performers rated as “excellent” on their last performance assessment and who had gotten promotions a minimum of three times. Their salary was the top reason why they jump ship, at 24%.While 38% of high performers in the U.S. are “actively” looking for a job, just 13% of them in Canada are.More money can convince some employees to stick aroundFor some respondents, cash is king. Forty-two percent  of those surveyed in North America would stick it out at a job they didn’t enjoy if their salary went up by 1%-10%. But the money wouldn’t make things sweeter for 39% of workers - those respondents wouldn’t remain in their job for any price tag if they were in the same situation.Among high performers, 27% of Americans and 46% of Canadians wouldn’t take a raise of any dollar amount to stay in a job they weren’t happy doing. What companies can do to retain employeesFor those “actively” seeking out new jobs, they picked “non-competitive salary,” “lengthy commute,” “uninteresting work,” a lack of chances for advancement and “poor manager relationships” as the main five drivers of their departure from a company. While some employees will inevitably leave, there are certain things employers can do, according to the report.Lisa Sterling, Chief People Officer at Ceridian commented on the findings in a statement.“While salary creates a baseline for happiness at work, it isn’t everything. Organizations looking to retain their most effective employees need to invest in a culture that will keep them happy,” Sterling said. “Work/life balance, opportunity for advancement, and a positive work environment all play a role.”She also summed things up  in the report, saying that when companies prioritize their workers, the workers do the same in return and choose to work harder in a way that “drives a culture of excellence.”

Will One Resume Typo Ruin Your Job Chances

Will One Resume Typo Ruin Your Job Chances Will One Resume Typo Ruin Your Job Chances 3It’s been preached from every career advice mountain top out there that certain missteps in your job search are really tough to overcome. But everyone makes mistakes, right? So will one resume typo ruin your job chances with an employer? Really? According to a recent Business Insider article, Laszlo Bock, Google HR boss, says that 58 percent of resumes sent to Google- sometimes as many as 50,000 each week- have typos. And yes, they end up in the no pile as a result. Other common resume mistakes that Bock  sees frequently include resumes that are too long, formatted badly, and contain falsehoods, as well as candidates who reveal confidential information about past companies. What is a job seeker to do? No one intentionally includes typos in their resume, but it’s easy to miss one. Anyone who has ever written anything knows that when you re-read and attempt to edit your own work, you read what you intended to say and it’s tough to see your mistakes. Professional writers typically can’t even do it, which is why editors  are a writer’s best friend. Here are four  tips to catch those resume typos: Read your resume from the bottom up. Changing the order of how you are reading the information will help your brain focus more on the specific words. Change the look of your resume. Our brains are wired to generalize simple tasks, such as reading what we’ve written, causing us to be more aware of the meaning being conveyed as opposed to the actual words. If you make your resume appear less familiar when you are editing, you will pay closer attention. Try altering the font or background color. Some people go old school, preferring a printed copy and a red pen. Peer review. As early as kindergarten, children learn to give their work to a friend to look over. Opinions aside, an objective set of eyes is still your best bet to detecting and correcting any errors that your resume might have. Turn to the professionals. It can be well worth the investment to have your resume reviewed by a service, especially if you get more interviews as a result. Companies such as ResumeDeli and Professional Resume Services ( members receive a discount on each of their services!) offer everything from simple review and critiques to developing your resume from scratch. Now that your resume is sparkling and perfect, turn that same critical eye to other parts of your job search. Those same typos in your cover letter, Facebook posts, LinkedIn profile, and blog can ruin your job chances too. Remember, your application is designed to get your foot in the door. Don’t let a recruiter assume you have poor attention to detail because of a typo. Readers, how do you feel about so much importance being placed on a single resume typo?

BigLaw Firm Howrey LLP to dissolve

BigLaw Firm Howrey LLP to dissolve BigLaw Firm Howrey LLP to dissolve Law firm Howrey LLP has announced that it will dissolve. An innovator in the legal industry, the firm had discarded lockstep compensation and enhanced its summer program with Howrey Bootcamp, an intense, lifelike mock trial during which summer associates learn to take a deposition, do a cross- and direct-examination and do opening and closing arguments. Howrey also established the First Tiera two-year program through which junior attorneys are limited to 700 hours of billable work and spend the remainder of their time training, shadowing attorneys and working at clients offices. But somewhere between its innovating, Howrey hit some bumps. According to Bob Ruyak, Chairman and CEO of Howrey, [t]he firm had experienced disappointing financial performance over the past two years and subsequently several partners had resigned. Based on these troubles, Howreys partnership voted yesterday to dissolve as of March 15, 2010.This is a very difficult time for our firm, for our attorneys and for o ur staff, says Ruyak in the firm's press release. Many of us have spent our entire legal careers at Howrey and remain proud of what we built. We find some solace in the fact that our people have been so well received by their new firms. They are first class professionals and deserve the respect accorded to leaders in their fields. The firm has established a dissolution committee and has retained Peter Gilhulywho also counseled Thelen on its dissolutionof Latham Watkins to handle the dissolution. Some Howrey partners will be transitioning to other firms like Sidley Austin, Perkins Coie, KL Kates, Dewey LeBoeuf and Winston Strawn (which originally was rumored to be hiring more Howrey attorneys than it actually is).But the firms mention of WARN letters in its press release reminds us that many will, no doubt, be without jobs as a result of Howreys dissolution. In a legal job market that is already struggling, its a shame to see more additions to the unemployment pool.So were there a ny hints that Howrey would crumble? The firmwhich moved from 78 to 75 in the 2011 Vault Law 100 rankingscertainly received some positive feedback in last year's Vault survey, with associates touting such positives as,The people and the collegial working environment, the flexibility for work (i.e., working at home), and the interesting and complex cases. Relaxed culture. No one cares when you are in or not just so long as the work that needs to get done is getting done. Friendly people and interesting work. But other associates complained about the following downers:The lack of visibility in decision-making and below-market compensation. Not enough work; not a friendly place overall; we get paid less than associates at other big firms; we don't have much responsibility.Others had mixed feelings on the firm. One associate from Palo Alto described sufficient billable work despite the down market but little transparency in other areas: In a tumultuous market, many colleagues have been ab le to stay busy on billable work that is both interesting and offers opportunities to develop new skills. The myriad of unknowns about individualized compensation, the new 'Tier 1' program, and often conflicting reports about the firm's finances are regular distractions.Click here to read more about Howrey and its associates' feedback in last year's Vault survey.Howrey press release The Am Law Daily Source Above the Law Source Howrey siteHowrey Summer ProgramRead More: Howrey's First Tier: so far, so good?FOLLOW VAULT LAW ON TWITTER! @VaultLaw
