Know Your Audience
Know Your AudienceKnow Your AudienceBefore you say it or write it, think about the listener and reader. How do they want to hear it and read it?The starting point for all communication is becoming aware of the intended audience and approaching them on an appropriate level. So many times, people get themselves into difficult situations because they did not consider the audiences reaction to the message. Anyone could make a list of controversies that started as the result of an insensitive remark or one that was not well thought out. In addition to considering what the message says, as a writer (and speaker) you need to consider how the ideas are expressed. To ensure successful written communication, first think about the people who will read it. By putting yourself in their shoes, you will gain insight into what they want to know and how they want to be addressed. The Temple of Apollo at Delphi in Greece has an inscription that cautions each person to know yourself. Improving communica tions encourages people to know thy audience.Salespeople are no strangers to the concept of put yourself in the buyers position. It means that the seller (in this case, you as writer) will consider what features and benefits to present to the person on the receiving end. Word choice and message length (think brevity) will show your recipient how much thought and care you put into crafting your message.Audiences are composed of people, all of whom have different perceptions. These questions will yield a variety of answers, simply because perceptions differWhat is a lot of money? What is tall? What is hot?Its a fun exercise to ask these questions in a diverse group. Notice how responses differ, based on peoples life experiences, income levels, educational backgrounds - anyone could increase this list. In fact, try asking a group to define the word hit. Youll get answers that range from a Top 40 single to another card at the blackjack table and many others. The point is that by showing the audience that you thought about these factors before approaching them, youre demonstrating that you care about them. What could be a better compliment? To avoid having messages misperceived, misconstrued or misunderstood, choose language that will be understood by fruchtwein (preferably all) of your recipients. Think of the individuals who comprise your audience before you communicate with them. Ask yourselfWho is the audience? Why am I writing/presenting? What do I want my audience to know or do?What do they already know? What is their level of understanding? What is their likely attitude about the topic? How can I honor my audiences needs and perspectives? What does my audience want to achieve? What medium will support the message the best - e-mail, letter, memo, report, proposal, etc.?What format or layout will appeal to the audience and support the message? Then, as the final step before beginning to write, organize your ideas. Its a true sign of respect for your audience. Show th at you are concerned for their time and attention. Plan to present the information that will make the most sense to them. Your organizational pattern may take any form (chronological, inside to outside, top to bottom, etc.). However you deliver the information, just make sure that someone new to your subject area will get it without having to strain the brain to do so. With all this in place, youre ready to put fingers to keyboard, or (how dated to say) pen to paper. Approach the task with a positive attitude, a clear purpose and straightforward organization, and youll be on the path to achieving your goal.

These 5 Email Mistakes Can Kill Your Career
These 5 schmelzglas Mistakes Can Kill Your CareerThese 5 Email Mistakes Can Kill Your Career In an age of social media, where Snapchat and Instagram are all the rage, it can quickly appear as if the schmelzglas is outdated and elend really needed. But not so fast What do the statistics say?According to a Technalysis Research survey of 1,001 working US adults, email is totenstill the fruchtwein used means of communication in the workplace. According to the study , 75 percent of communications with co-workers take place via old school methods of communication such as email, phone, and text while 78 of workplace communications with outside contact takes please via email, phone, and text.Email can make or break your career, and it is crucial to avoid making the following email mistakes 1. Not Sending a Thank You Email After a Job Interview One of the most dangerous email mistakes you can make that can negatively affect your career has to do with the early stages of your career . Specifically, it is the mistake of not sending a thank you email to your interviewer after a successful job interview. In fact, some hiring decision makers would flat out filter out a candidate for not sending a thank you note.According to a research study by Accountemps , a Robert Half company, 80 percent of HR managers say that after-interview thank you messages from interview candidates are helpful when reviewing candidates, and 94 percent of these HR managers prefer to receive the thank you messages through email. Yet, just 24 percent of job applicants send a thank you note. Not only will sending a thank you email after a job interview help you stand out and increase your chances of landing the job, but not sending it could actually kill your job prospects.2. Failing to Send a Follow-Up Email After a Job Application According to research from Glassdoor, the average job opening will attract 250 applications from job-seeking candidates, around four to six of t he candidates will be called for an interview, and just one will be hired. Despite this overwhelming odds against their application, a significant 37 percent of job seekers do not follow up after submitting their job application. Most recruiters dont have the time to go through 250 applications and will give preference to applications that stand out one of the most effective ways to stand out and be noticed is by properly following up via email. In fact, a Robert Half study found that 100 percent of Canadian hiring managers encourage job candidates to follow up on their application.3. Gossiping About a Superior or a Co-Worker in Your Email Ranking high on the list of email mistakes that can kill your career is the mistake of gossiping about a fellow worker or a superior in your email. This is based on a national survey by staffing agency The Creative Group that surveyed 250 executives randomly selected from some of the worlds biggest companies. According to the survey, gossipi ng about a superior or co-worker will almost always result in a termination. In a particular instance, a receptionist sent a gossipy and catty email about another employee to the wrong person and she paid with her job. In another instance, someone made a nasty comment about a supervisor in an email. The email was then sent to the supervisor by mistake, leading to the dismissal of the person who wrote the email. While it might seem fun and innocuous at first, avoid gossiping about any of your co-worker or supervisor by email. The email could get forwarded to them accidentally, or intentionally, and can cost you your job.4, Bad Email Grammar While you might not be a writer or work at a writing-related job, it is important to realize that bad email grammar can cost you your job. Several CEOs have gone on record to state that they wont hire people who use poor grammar this includes the CEO of iFixit who once published an HBR opinion piece on why he wont hire people who use poor grammar and a piece from founder of Candid Culture, Shari Harley, who explained that she had to pass on a candidate due to poor grammar usage. While bad email grammar could make it difficult for you to get hired, it could also result in you getting fired from your existing job. Just ask New Zealand accountant Vicki Walker who was fired from her job due to bad email grammar, or ask Liz who almost got fired because her email indicating that she re-sent (as in, sent again) an email from her superior was misunderstood to mean that she resent (as in, hate) the email.Good email grammar speaks volumes about you that youre patient and focused, and that you most importantly care about how you are perceived and as a result put good effort into it traits any employer will value.5. Violating Company Email Rules Most organizations have clear rules about what employees can and cant do with company email address. For some, it is that you musnt access company email on devices outside of the corporat e network. For others, it is that you must never use company email for personal purposes. For political office holders, knowledge of violating email rules has always resulted in scandals, possible dismissals, and political loss. It isnt much different in the corporate world.Your organization most certainly has email rules - things you can and cant do with the company email. It is important to familiarize yourself with these rules and avoid violating them.
5 Job Seeking Tips for Baby Boomers
5 Job Seeking Tips for Baby Boomers 5 Job Seeking Tips for Baby Boomers There are now four generations of workers competing in todayâs job market: Millennials, Gen X, Gen Z, and Baby Boomers. For the first time in the USA, it is possible to find employees in a company born almost 60 years apart. For Baby Boomers born between 1946 to 1964, it has become increasingly difficult to find work due to age discrimination. The myths surrounding older workers usually talk about how they are difficult to work with or overqualified. If you are a Baby Boomer, read these job seeking tips on how to get around biases and myths as you are job seeking. 5. Research who you will interview with Interviewing with hiring managers across generations comes with challenges. Each generation has a very different attitude of how one should work and the proper attitude for the company. So, yes, be a bit of an ageist yourself. You may need to adjust your approach with each hiring manager. For example, a Millennial or Gen Z hiring manager will not view âcompany loyaltyâ as valuable. You may need to sell them on your ability to be tech savvy and adapt to changes. These generations are also 100% paperless. They do not know a time when paper filing existed. A Gen X hiring manager will focus more on your skills, experience, and quantifiable numbers while caring very little for a job candidateâs need for personal attention and acknowledgment. Gen X'ers, by nature, is also a suspicious bunch. Any job skill you claim to have needs to be backed up with facts. It helps to estimate how old the hiring manager might be to see what approach you need for the job interview. 4. Show you are not clueless about todayâs trends This does not mean you should dress like a Millennial or Gen Z. This will make you look like you are trying too hard and look older than you are. However, toss out the old resume and get one done in todayâs resume language. Maintain a high level of energy. Also, get in touch with todayâs technology and show a never-ending passion for learning and changing. Update your social media footprint to show you are aware why certain social media behaviors are frowned upon by younger generations. 3. Get to the point at all times As a Baby Boomer, you have seen it all. You have watched America change several times and no doubt you have stories about your experiences and overcoming challenges. However, for job interviews, get to the point and stay focused on what the company needs at all times. Show how your experience makes you prepared for the job, but do not go into lengthy stories or explanations. 2. Do not scare companies with your qualifications Experienced Baby Boomers often generate a fear that they will be overqualified. Ease that fear by letting hiring managers know you would love to help further advance teams with your qualifications. You are letting the company know in an unselfish way that they will benefit from your knowledge. You are expressing that you will never be greedy or difficult with others when it comes to your experience. You are there to help teams and a company grow, not withhold information or make lives difficult. 1. Show you want to learn Life is about facing challenges caused by a need to reinvent yourself every five years. However, at some point in life, we tend to seek comfort more than challenges. In the process, people learn less and stick to a routine. If you are a Baby Boomer used to an outdated way of working, you will need to change and be willing to learn something new, not just for the job but for the rest of your time at the company. For your interview, do not just talk about what you would like to do, go a step further and seek opportunities to do more. Consider volunteer work or taking business courses related to a new trend. You are showing everyone that you have what it takes to reinvent yourself, consider new ideas, and learn new skills needed for your career.

Reaching Self-Actualization Through Our Jobs [Infographic]
Reaching Self-Actualization Through Our Jobs [Infographic] Reaching Self-Actualization Through Our Jobs [Infographic] In order to reach self-actualization, we have to fulfill the more basic needs that reside on the lower levels of Maslowâs famous hierarchy of needs. These lower levels include our physiological needs (like food and water), safety, love and belonging, and esteem. Achieving these milestones within the confines of our careers can be especially difficult. With that in mind, we offer the following tips on reaching self-actualization in a work environment. Safety Safety and security donât just revolve around having a home and avoiding life-threatening danger. Rather, feeling safe and secure also means having things like job security, good health, and general life stability. Finding employment with a company that has long-term growth potential or that offers a service that will never be unnecessary can help ensure job security. You should feel certain about your companys future and vitality. Having stability within your work environment is vital, too: change can be good, but too much change in too little time can be unsettling. It is also important to find ways to ensure your health. Working in a dangerous job or for a company that lacks health coverage can disrupt ones progress towards feeling safe. An employer that offers paid leave or cost-effective health coverage is a good employer, from a safety standpoint. Love and Belonging Love and belonging is all about relationships. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find friends within the workplace, but doing so is dramatically important. You want to find a work environment that makes you feel valued, like you are part of a cohesive team. If you donât feel like part of a team, or if you feel secluded from your coworkers, it can be difficult to feel like you belong. Having friendships in the workplace encourages us to come to work every day, and it makes a job more enjoyable. Things are less stressful when we have others to talk with and vent to. Look for an office setting that cultivates friendships and open communication. Try to encourage social events outside of work and make efforts to find friends. Also seek out companies emphasize team-building and group activities. Esteem For Maslow, esteem is all about feeling successful. This is accomplished through things like awards and respect. An office setting that recognizes achievements through bonuses and other rewards can help us feel more esteemed. Gaining a higher education can also help us with esteem. College degrees not only help us with job security, but they can also help us land higher positions at work. Being able to add Dr. or Ph.D. to your name is also a little bit of personal prestige that should give you a boost every time your write it. Employees who have reached self-actualization tend to be more productive and positive. They become strong leaders in their companies and are usually the ones that others look to for advice. Finding personal growth in the workplace benefits not only you, but also the company your work for. Survey These are the reasons employees stay or dont
Survey These are the reasons employees stay â" or don't Survey These are the reasons employees stay - or don't Global human capital management technology company Ceridian recently released the 2017 Pulse of Talent Report showing that âgood relations with colleaguesâ was the most popular reason high performers remained with their employers, cited by 49% of high-performing employees.Respondents could pick more than one answer on the survey, and these other reasons werenât far behind: âgood salaryâ (48%), âinteresting workâ (47%), and âgood working conditionsâ and âjob securityâ (both 46%).Workers in the âhigh performingâ category were defined as those âwith the best job dedication and the strongest commitment to helping the company achieve its goals.âResearchers surveyed 1,602 people in Canada and the U.S., who ârepresented salaried and hourly workers, as well as a mix of full-time and part-time employees 18 years of age and older.â The Nielsen Company carried out the study for Ceridian.Generational differencesThe report also looked at how different generatio ns view their current work situations. Among those surveyed in North America who havenât hit age 30 yet, more than half want to stay where they currently work for fewer than 5 years. Older workers were happier to stay put. For all participants, the number looking to leave within five years was 38%.Where high-performers workAmong high performers in both the U.S. and Canada, 85% say theyâre employed at places that make their values evident (compared to 72% of all surveyed), 72% know what their company seeks to accomplish professionally (compared to 49% of all surveyed), and 81% âfeel positive or very positive about the companyâs financial futureâ (compared to 69% of the general population). But money has the power to make some star hires leave - the report looked at high performers rated as âexcellentâ on their last performance assessment and who had gotten promotions a minimum of three times. Their salary was the top reason why they jump ship, at 24%.While 38% of high performers in the U.S. are âactivelyâ looking for a job, just 13% of them in Canada are.More money can convince some employees to stick aroundFor some respondents, cash is king. Forty-two percent of those surveyed in North America would stick it out at a job they didnât enjoy if their salary went up by 1%-10%. But the money wouldnât make things sweeter for 39% of workers - those respondents wouldnât remain in their job for any price tag if they were in the same situation.Among high performers, 27% of Americans and 46% of Canadians wouldnât take a raise of any dollar amount to stay in a job they werenât happy doing. What companies can do to retain employeesFor those âactivelyâ seeking out new jobs, they picked ânon-competitive salary,â âlengthy commute,â âuninteresting work,â a lack of chances for advancement and âpoor manager relationshipsâ as the main five drivers of their departure from a company. While some employees will inevitably leave, there are certain things employers can do, according to the report.Lisa Sterling, Chief People Officer at Ceridian commented on the findings in a statement.âWhile salary creates a baseline for happiness at work, it isnât everything. Organizations looking to retain their most effective employees need to invest in a culture that will keep them happy,â Sterling said. âWork/life balance, opportunity for advancement, and a positive work environment all play a role.âShe also summed things up in the report, saying that when companies prioritize their workers, the workers do the same in return and choose to work harder in a way that âdrives a culture of excellence.â

Will One Resume Typo Ruin Your Job Chances
Will One Resume Typo Ruin Your Job Chances Will One Resume Typo Ruin Your Job Chances 3Itâs been preached from every career advice mountain top out there that certain missteps in your job search are really tough to overcome. But everyone makes mistakes, right? So will one resume typo ruin your job chances with an employer? Really? According to a recent Business Insider article, Laszlo Bock, Google HR boss, says that 58 percent of resumes sent to Google- sometimes as many as 50,000 each week- have typos. And yes, they end up in the no pile as a result. Other common resume mistakes that Bock sees frequently include resumes that are too long, formatted badly, and contain falsehoods, as well as candidates who reveal confidential information about past companies. What is a job seeker to do? No one intentionally includes typos in their resume, but itâs easy to miss one. Anyone who has ever written anything knows that when you re-read and attempt to edit your own work, you read what you intended to say and itâs tough to see your mistakes. Professional writers typically canât even do it, which is why editors are a writerâs best friend. Here are four tips to catch those resume typos: Read your resume from the bottom up. Changing the order of how you are reading the information will help your brain focus more on the specific words. Change the look of your resume. Our brains are wired to generalize simple tasks, such as reading what weâve written, causing us to be more aware of the meaning being conveyed as opposed to the actual words. If you make your resume appear less familiar when you are editing, you will pay closer attention. Try altering the font or background color. Some people go old school, preferring a printed copy and a red pen. Peer review. As early as kindergarten, children learn to give their work to a friend to look over. Opinions aside, an objective set of eyes is still your best bet to detecting and correcting any errors that your resume might have. Turn to the professionals. It can be well worth the investment to have your resume reviewed by a service, especially if you get more interviews as a result. Companies such as ResumeDeli and Professional Resume Services ( members receive a discount on each of their services!) offer everything from simple review and critiques to developing your resume from scratch. Now that your resume is sparkling and perfect, turn that same critical eye to other parts of your job search. Those same typos in your cover letter, Facebook posts, LinkedIn profile, and blog can ruin your job chances too. Remember, your application is designed to get your foot in the door. Donât let a recruiter assume you have poor attention to detail because of a typo. Readers, how do you feel about so much importance being placed on a single resume typo?

BigLaw Firm Howrey LLP to dissolve
BigLaw Firm Howrey LLP to dissolve BigLaw Firm Howrey LLP to dissolve Law firm Howrey LLP has announced that it will dissolve. An innovator in the legal industry, the firm had discarded lockstep compensation and enhanced its summer program with Howrey Bootcamp, an intense, lifelike mock trial during which summer associates learn to take a deposition, do a cross- and direct-examination and do opening and closing arguments. Howrey also established the First Tiera two-year program through which junior attorneys are limited to 700 hours of billable work and spend the remainder of their time training, shadowing attorneys and working at clients offices. But somewhere between its innovating, Howrey hit some bumps. According to Bob Ruyak, Chairman and CEO of Howrey, [t]he firm had experienced disappointing financial performance over the past two years and subsequently several partners had resigned. Based on these troubles, Howreys partnership voted yesterday to dissolve as of March 15, 2010.This is a very difficult time for our firm, for our attorneys and for o ur staff, says Ruyak in the firm's press release. Many of us have spent our entire legal careers at Howrey and remain proud of what we built. We find some solace in the fact that our people have been so well received by their new firms. They are first class professionals and deserve the respect accorded to leaders in their fields. The firm has established a dissolution committee and has retained Peter Gilhulywho also counseled Thelen on its dissolutionof Latham Watkins to handle the dissolution. Some Howrey partners will be transitioning to other firms like Sidley Austin, Perkins Coie, KL Kates, Dewey LeBoeuf and Winston Strawn (which originally was rumored to be hiring more Howrey attorneys than it actually is).But the firms mention of WARN letters in its press release reminds us that many will, no doubt, be without jobs as a result of Howreys dissolution. In a legal job market that is already struggling, its a shame to see more additions to the unemployment pool.So were there a ny hints that Howrey would crumble?
